Malawians residing around Sankhulani Full Primary School in Senior Traditional Authority Mlolo in Nsanje district sited an inflax of Mozambicans crossing the Malawi-Mozambique border, at Osiyana, and Sankhulani border crossings, respectively.
The refugees, whose legal status has to be confirmed by the relevant authorities in Malawi, crossed the border on the afternoon of 23rd December 2024.
The refugees comprised children, women, pregnant women, the elderly, and the youth.
One of the victims told Muona Foundation President, Mr. William Allan, that they came from different parts of Mozambique where some families separated from their children and sought refuge in different evacuation camps in Malawi.
He also said some families have walked for five days to cross the border into Malawi, a painful, tiresome, and risky journey.
Muona Foundation, a local non-governmental organization in the area, was informed about the situation and rushed to the first two evacuation camps for a quick holistic assessment. It also donated maize flour and pigeon peas to alleviate hunger.
Despite the emergency food aid provided by the Muona Foundation, the refugees urgently need food and non-food items.
The food items may include, among other things, maize flour, polished rice, red beans, pigeon peas, table and kitchen salt, sugar, cooking oil, soy pieces, etc.
The non-food items include cooking utensils, blankets, sleeping mats, wash hand buckets, drinking water buckets, soap, tents, mosquito nets, sanitation facilities(toilets), emergency lights, rolls of thick plastic papers, clothes, sports equipment for the youth, and medical services support.
The refugees are currently housed in school blocks since learners are on Christmas vacation till 5th January 2025 and schools open again for the second term on 6th January 2025.
Muona Foundation is therefore appealing to governmental, and non-governmental organizations, the business community, faith-based organizations, and people of goodwill to join hands in supporting our struggling neighbours from Mozambique with any support we can manage to donate.
